All selected candidates must bring their proposed primary mentor to the Selection Committee.

The Oregon BIRCWH program provides salary support for 75% FTE up to $100,000 total (including other payroll expenses/fringe benefits), $3,500 yearly for supplies, and $2,600 yearly for travel related to the project. The scholar’s department must commit $10,000/year to the scholar which is matched by the institution at $15,000/year for a total of $25,000/year for research, supplies, and additional travel for the scholar.  The scholar also has access to core statistical and IRB services.

To apply, submit a 4-6 page letter of intent with the following information:

  1. Description of candidate and commitment to research in women's health.
  2. Describe how the OHSU BIRCWH program will further the candidate's research career and ultimately impact women's health.
  3. Career development plan (including timeline).
  4. Proposed Mentor if known and mentorship plan.
  5. Research Plan: specific aims, background, research design and methods (including timeline). References are not included in the page limit.
  6. Biosketch of candidate and primary mentor (not included in page limit). Biosketches of remaining mentors are encouraged but not required.
  7. Letter of support from the department chair confirming a faculty appointment and departmental committments. See "Selection Criteria" for more information.
  8. Letters of support/recommendation from mentor team or others are not required, but may be included.

Eligibility PDF E-mail

Successful applicants to the Oregon BIRCWH will:

  • not have more than 6 years of research training or experience after their doctoral degree
  • have a clinical doctorate or Ph.D. degree or its equivalent
  • will be a US citizen or possess an Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-151 or I-155)
  • have identified mentors with extensive research experience
  • be able to dedicate at least 75% of time to women's health research
  • must NOT be a PI on an R01 or K award.

Selection Criteria PDF E-mail

The program and study sections will review all submitted applications. Some of these candidates will be selected to make a presentation to the OHSU BIRCWH selection committee. The presentation should expand upon the candidates application. Mentors are asked to accompany the applicant and speak to the mentorship plan and departmental support of the candidate. All applicants are asked to have their department chair send  a letter directly to the Oregon BIRCWH program ensuring a commitment to protect 75% of scholar's time for research and agreements to provide other resources as needed (e.g. work space, etc).

Scholars will be selected based upon their perceived potential to develop into academically and scientifically successful investigators and women's health. Several factors will be used to evaluate this potential :

  1. Candidate's qualifications and dedication to women's health
  2. Availability and dedication of qualified mentors
  3. Departmental commitment to the individual both in terms of complete protection of 75% of their time to research for the tenure of their scholarship, provision of space, equipment and $10,000/yr of discretionary funds for the investigator to pursue their research
  4. Demonstrated commitment of the candidate to women's health, research, and academics
  5. Scientific and technical merit of proposed research (institution provides $15,000 matching funds)
  6. Demonstrated potential for becoming a successful independent investigator in women's health research
  7. Demonstration that this BIRCWH program is a good fit for the candidate to foster their career as a highly productive investigator in women's health
